This is the story of the teacher who took a fish out of the aquarium in his classroom, placed it on the table in front of the class, and then left the room with the message that no one was allowed to move from their seat. Anyone who resists this would be immediately expelled from school.

None of the children moved and everyone watched as the fish struggled. Nobody dared to get up to avoid getting into trouble.
But finally a girl jumped up from her seat, ran to the fish and let it back into its tank. After all, she was the only one who refused to watch the fish die.

When the teacher returned, he explained to the class that this had been a lesson. That the fear of getting in trouble should never stop you from doing the right thing. That sometimes you have to defy authority and groupthink simply because it's the right thing to do.
