Anna:
In the past few months I've received tons of mail from seemingly well-meaning people talking about an alleged never-ending struggle between Jacob and Esau, his older brother whom Jacob betrayed.
They derive this from reading the Book of Esdra, a book of Scripture that has not been included as part of the Bible.
According to Esdra, Esau and Jacob and all of their respective descendants are in an eternal war with each other, and we are caught in the middle and must choose sides.
Oh, and did I tell you that Esau is the villain in this drama? This is where “victim blaming” got its big start folks.
You will remember I told you that there are two (2) gods in the Bible and especially in the Old Testament you must adjust your ears to discern their very different "voices" to discern which of speaks to you right now.
This is a case in point.
In the official canon of scripture contained in the Bible, God number two says, “I have always hated Esau….but I loved Jacob…..”.
And now?

Let's take a look at the two brothers.
Esau, the eldest, is red-haired, stubborn and strong, a hard worker who hunts and works on the farm, tending the animals and getting things done. He's a practical, down-to-earth guy who doesn't bother with daydreams and immaterial things. In today's world, we would describe Esau as a man of action.
Jacob, Esau's younger brother, is dark haired and handsome, more like the rest of the family, and he's much more effeminate, much more the mama's boy who gets to stay at home with mommy and be spoiled and doesn't have to do the hard work.
In the context of the story, Esau obviously suffers what too many children suffer: parental favoritism, where one parent favors one of their children over the others, thereby harming all children. Esau suffers from a lack of motherly love, and Jacob is spoiled by too much love. Esau also carries the burden of the elder son and heir apparent - all the hard work and responsibility of taking care of the estate, the flocks and the needs of the family from an early age.
But back to the story, his own mother is actively plotting against Esau to deprive him of his birthright, for which he has worked hard all his life.
Do you consider that?
The true God had decreed that Esau should be born first, for that was how it was in real life, but a scheming mother decided to put the younger son above the elder and deceive her elder husband Isaac into blessing the younger son are.
And Jacob does not resist. He follows in step with his mother. They come up with something to make his arms feel hairy like his brother's, and because he is blind, Isaac gives him the blessing meant for Esau.
They try to defend their actions, claiming that Esau "sold" his birthright for a bowl of porridge, but that too is based on fraudulent contract practices and breach of trust.
There is no full disclosure. No reason for Esau to take his younger brother seriously.
This whole story is about fraud and deception, illegal contracting, and worst of all, betraying Isaac and disregarding the true God.
If we are to believe that, the entire founding of the chosen people is based on fraud. And lies. And abuse of trust. And who is the father of all lies?

If we don't see which "god" is talking about how he hates Esau and loves Jacob, we get the impression that our God loves liars and cheats and swindlers, because that's what Jacob is.
Yet throughout the Bible and in our own experience, our Father hates lies, liars, and gossips. They are on his top ten list of despicable creations that I have allowed to exist because I gave them free will to hang themselves.
Are we to believe that he, our Creator, who is the same yesterday, today and tomorrow, simply changed his eternal choice and nature and made an exception, suddenly choosing a liar and a cheat over a true man?
No.
In the Bible, after many years of wandering in Egypt and other places, Jacob returns to his homeland and dreads meeting his brother Esau, who stayed at home and was blessed in his own way, with many children and rich flocks and possessions .
What will Esau do? Will he fall upon Jacob and his family with his superior powers, taking everything they have and perhaps killing them all in revenge? no In the Bible, the two brothers meet, make peace over the past, and Esau helps Jacob find a place and settle down.
That's what the Bible says, and the Bible should be believed, if only because it shows the power of forgiveness, the strength of brotherhood in good men who honor their God-given responsibilities, and the way of peace that the present does not spoil because of the past.
It is Esau who makes this happy solution possible.
And the true God? The True God richly blessed Esau and saw him safe and happy in the land of his fathers, at peace, and doing what he loved to do.
Jacob wandered like a lost sheep in a storm, faced terrible conflict and loss after terrible conflict, sold his beautiful wife's favor for his own gain, lost his favorite son (or so he believed for many years), wrestled with the devil in Bethesda and lost ten of his sons and their tribes to Baal worship... he lost Rachel, never really appreciated his first wife Leah - let's face it Jacob was a mess. Drama was his middle name.
Esau was blessed despite Isaac's mistake. And if Jacob was blessed, that would have been big news for him, because his whole life has been one great lesson after another.

So let's read the whole story as it is told in the Bible and realize: No, Esau and Jacob were reconciled while they were alive. It is extremely unlikely that the enmity between them continued, let alone into the distant future of today.
For example the conflict between Cain and Abel. It's clear that two completely different mentalities and people emerged from this, and it's clear that the two brothers were so opposite that their conflict ended in murder.
And again we have an unknown "god" who protects an evildoer by putting a special mark on his head.
Would our Father, the True God, protect and condone a murderer and selfish person who might do such a thing and say with a shrug, "Am I my brother's keeper?"
Here again is "god number two" at work, who has a guest appearance in the rest of the story - Satan protects his own.
What happens to Cain? He went to the land of Nod (forgetfulness: he forgot he had killed his brother, didn't even think about what he had done) and built cities.
And what do we find today? Hordes of money-crazed townsfolk, cut off from the earth, encouraged in selfishness, materialism, thoughtlessness and political correctness. Many have exactly the same mindset and attitude as their father, and if you ask them, they'll look at you like stupid animals and say, "What's that to me?"
They never have the answer to their question, "Am I my brother's keeper?" heard because the True God did not speak to them.
Now please take away a valuable lesson - the Bible is a difficult book. You can read them in many ways and it is up to you to discern what you see in them, but I warn you that you should not take anything for granted, read them with discernment so that you can distinguish between the two "gods" who exist speak from her sides, discern and find the truth in what she reveals.
