On February 1, 2016, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared a global health emergency because of the Zika virus. This gives the WHO authority to issue instructions and can also request states outside the infected area to take measures to prevent the pathogen from spreading. So far, the so-called epidemic area mainly includes Brazil and other Latin American countries. The virus has now also been diagnosed in several European and North American countries.
