This is one of the most controversial books on the Christian Jesus story ever published. Is the need for an immortal hero to save humanity part of the deep structure of our brain? Does religion simply fulfill a psychological need that is inherent in being human? One may pick this book apart in its details, but it was one of the first to address this "big" question, the answer to which is as urgent now as it was then. The sixteen crucified Saviors of the World raised a multitude of questions, few of which have been adequately answered over a century later. Apart from that, the book has serious flaws. Graves evidently did not work from original sources, with the exception of the Bible; it also confuses Vaishnava Hinduism and Buddhism, two belief systems with fundamental differences. Apart from that, the traditional stories of Krishna and Buddha do share motifs with the New Testament stories of Jesus.
