This painting titled
“The truth rising from the well”
was painted in 1896 by the Frenchman Jean-Léon Gérôme.
And he wanted to illustrate the following story:

“The truth and the lie met one day.
The lie said to the truth: “Today is a wonderful day”!
Truth looked to the sky and sighed, for the day was truly beautiful.
They spent a lot of time together and finally arrived at a well.
The lie says to the truth: “The water is very beautiful, let’s take a bath together!”
Truth became suspicious again, tested the water and found that it was indeed lovely.
They both undressed and bathed.
Suddenly the lie jumped out of the water, quickly put on the clothes of truth and ran away.
The angry truth climbed out of the well and looked everywhere for the lie to get her clothes back.
The world turned its gaze away in contempt and anger when it saw the naked truth.
Poor Truth returned to the well and disappeared forever to hide her shame.
Since then, the lie has traveled around the world in the guise of truth and is generally popular
Most people don’t want to see the naked truth either…
