According to official figures, the death toll from the severe earthquake in Turkey and Syria has risen to more than 9. There are 500 confirmed victims in Turkey and 6 in Syria, for a total of 957. The World Health Organization estimates that up to 2 people may have been killed. The number of wounded is 547.

As videos of the last miraculous rescues circulate around the world, the hope of rescuing people alive from the rubble dwindles by the hour. So far, over 8.000 people have been rescued by rescuers from different countries around the world who have also struggled with the complications of rain and snow.

However, in Syria, where the earthquake struck Aleppo governorate and particularly Idlib province, which is controlled in part by the HTS terrorists, heirs to al-Qaeda offshoot Al Nusra, and is funded and armed by neighboring Turkey large areas inaccessible.

It is precisely this social fragmentation between the areas controlled by the Syrian government and those controlled by the jihadists that complicates the search and rescue of the wounded in some cities such as Harem, which was completely destroyed by the earthquake, which had its epicenter near Gaziantep and possibly caused by decades of oil drilling in an area of very high seismic risk.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (a UK-based non-governmental organization supporting the anti-Assad revolution) reported a total of 2.571 casualties, including 1.331 in the government-controlled area of Damascus and 1.420 among the jihadist rebels.

The violent earthquake also caused total and partial damage to buildings in 72 villages, towns and communities in central, north-west and west Syria, mainly in the provinces of Aleppo and Idlib, but also in the provinces of Hama, Latakia and Tartus.

Foreign Minister Dr. Fayssal Mikdad stressed that the disaster of the earthquake that shook Syria on Monday was "great" and that the difficult circumstances that the country has been going through for 12 years and the fight against terrorism and its supporters have compounded the disaster.

In an interview with al-Mayadeen TV channel on Tuesday, Mikdad added that US sanctions prevent anything from coming out of Syria, although humanitarian aid is not subject to sanctions under international law.

"Since the first moments of the devastating earthquake, the Syrian state has mobilized all its forces as President Bashar al-Assad chaired an emergency cabinet meeting that approved a national emergency plan, managed by a 24-hour centralized operations center," said Mikdad.

The foreign minister added that the State Department called on the member states of the United Nations, the United Nations Secretariat-General, its relevant agencies and funds, as well as the International Committee of the Red Cross and other humanitarian, governmental and non-governmental organizations to support Syria in addressing the humanitarian disaster, noting that “many fraternal and friendly countries responded to the call as humanitarian aid planes soon arrived at the international airports of Damascus, Aleppo and Lattakia and then to the affected areas.

"The sanctions imposed on Syria by the United States and Western countries have made the disaster even worse," Mikdad stressed, calling on all peoples and countries of the world to provide the Syrian people with the necessary assistance to deal with this humanitarian catastrophe.

Mikdad stressed that the UN Security Council resolutions are clear, since humanitarian aid is not subject to any sanctions and any help in dealing with such disasters is allowed.

Mikdad also stressed that the Americans claim they have not imposed sanctions on humanitarian aid, but in reality their sanctions do not allow anything to get into Syria, including preventing the purchase of medicines, and Washington and its Western allies are issuing orders to some countries and threaten to impose sanctions on them if they negotiate with Syria or if a bank does business with Syria.

Mikdad thanked the countries and organizations that have provided assistance and expressed their solidarity with Syria and its people in this difficult and catastrophic situation.
